Counting Our Blessings

Does it seem coincidental that Thanksgiving is celebrated on the heels of the U.S. Presidential Election? Even though the first Thanksgiving was held 150 years before the American Revolution and 200 years before it was declared a National Holiday by Abraham Lincoln, it is entirely appropriate that both events are scheduled in the same month.
After all, the early settlers were giving thanks for the Blessings of prosperity and freedom in a new land. They subsequently formed the foundation of a new nation that guaranteed our right to vote in the Constitution, and laid the foundation of capitalism with the principle stated in the Declaration of Independence “That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” What a concept!
You may wonder what this history lesson has to do with your business or mine.
We all enjoy the freedom that exists in the U.S. economy to build a business and offer innovative and vital products and services. This concept was superbly expressed by Adam Smith, who was a contemporary of the Founding Fathers, in his book, “The Wealth of Nations”.
“How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it except the pleasure of seeing it.”
As Thanksgiving approaches, we feel grateful to live in a Country that guarantees the freedom to pursue one’s happiness, and give thanks to those who place their trust in our services.
